Albert Tucker Portraits (limited print run)
Albert Tucker Portraits (limited print run)
Albert Tucker (1914–99) is one of Australia’s most well-known and renowned
artists, and a key exponent of Australian modernism. He was primarily a
figurative painter who critically responded to the world around him. During
his career he played an active role in art politics, particularly in the 1940s,
writing influential articles about the direction of art in Australia. He also held
prominent positions within the art community, including President of the
Contemporary Art Society in the late 1940s and again in the 1960s.
The Tucker portraits was an exhibition first exhibited at the Museum of
Australian Photography (MAPh) (23 November 2019 – 9 February 2020). The
exhibition explores how Tucker used photography within his practice – from
inspiration and source material for his portrait paintings through to capturing
unique and intimate documents that explore the social, cultural and political
life in Australia. This publication marks the national tour of the exhibition
which begins in 2023.
We are proudly grateful for the support of the Albert and Barbara
Tucker Foundation which has enabled the exhibition to be accompanied by
this publication. It was a privilege to work alongside Darren Jones from the
Foundation to explore the artist’s archive and delve into the photographs
that document the artist’s life and career.
