It is the summation of a career witnessing and advocating for change: a collection of photographs making visible the history of the First Nations people’s struggle for justice over the last fifty years in Australia, providing a visual history and background of The Movement leading up to the Voice referendum of late 2023.

Until Justice Comes is a landmark publication based on collaboration, revealing the true history of Australia. The uncovering of an often-invisible history of resistance and the fight for self-determination has long been at the heart of Juno Gemes’ engagement with the First Nations people she has known and worked with over decades and generations. These photographs include portraits of political and cultural leaders and intimate community events as well as activism played out on the streets. Continuing her collaborative approach, the book includes new writings and poems by key contributors including the Honourable Linda Burney MP, Larissa Behrendt, Djon Mundine, Fred Myers, Frances Peters-Little, John Maynard, Catherine de Lorenzo, and Ali Cobby Eckermann. Photographs covering crucial moments in history including the Redfern Revolution, the land rights campaigns, the National Apology to the Stolen Generations, the election of eleven Indigenous Members to the 47th Federal Parliament, and the preparations for the 2023 Referendum on the Voice to Parliament, form the backbone of this book.

About the Author: Photographer and social justice activist Juno Gemes has spent much of her long career documenting the lives and struggles of First Nations people. Born in Brewarrina NSW in 1945, he used chance, charm and talent to join the staff of the Sydney Morning Herald at just 17. He won a top news photography award but never received the customary pay increase. Disillusioned, Bishop moved to Canberra as a government photographer and took the iconic photo of Gough Whitlam pouring earth into the hands of traditional owner Vincent Lingiari. He later returned to Sydney and was eventually befriended by the arts scene, leading to his first solo exhibition in 1991. But this victory was clouded by the death of his wife on the day of the opening. While often celebrated for chronicling the rising visibility of Indigenous Australians, Bishop is also proud of what he calls his "whitefella pictures". A series of juxtaposed image propositions, its assembly forms new relational narratives connecting the artists’ cultural perspectives of Wiradjuri/Sri Lankan/Celtic/European with topics of conflict, immigration, hope, confusion, complicity and power amongst image, shape, concealment and shadow. This practice of image juxtaposition is prevalent in Andrew’s and Walter’s artistic and cultural practices which re-define how the world can be reordered and seen. This perspective shifts ideas around building memories, timelines and making visible often devastating histories in ways that can hopefully heal: to imagine new ways to engage and acknowledge.

Dual/Duel creates a new space for looking through often cliché, but specific, images of power and narrative. The artists’ book simultaneously creates and examines pictorial connections that explore the implications of these associations to form new narratives about how we might begin to explain the histories they conjure.Dual/Duel is the result of a Georges Mora Fellowship awarded to the artists in 2014.
